Kinda, Sort Of

A docuseries following the unlikely trio behind Brooklyn’s favorite photo studio.

What happens when an overly optimistic, delusion-fueled go-getter leases a photo studio and ropes in her two best friends, one slightly pessimistic and the other self-obsessed, to help keep it afloat?

About

Kinda, Sort Of is a workplace mockumentary following three friends and the bizarre lengths they go to keep their Brooklyn photo studio open, all while accommodating the offbeat clients who walk through their doors.

The Cast

Shawn

Shawn is a photographer who needs to see it before he believes in it. He takes it upon himself to be the grounding presence every big three needs. Having two feet in reality is what keeps the the other two from flying too close to the sun. Beneath his reluctance to embrace their wild ideas, he’s fiercely protective and can always be counted on to step up when it matters most.

Played by Donté Hobbs

Brianna

Most of Bri’s time is spent trying to prove to her friends, and herself, that leasing this studio was a good idea, all while pitching her next over the top idea. Her overconfidence and delusion act as both the engine of the studio’s success and the source of its spiraling. While her impulsiveness leads her to overcomplicate even the simplest ideas, it’s her optimism, relentlessness, and firm belief that a cup of iced coffee can fix anything that keeps it all going.

Nia

Played by Manisha Wong

Although her conceitedness often leads her friends to believe she’s checked out of the situation at hand, she consistently surprises them by using her influence to show just how committed she is to both them and the studio. Beneath her carefully curated social media persona, she’s deeply passionate about helping the people she cares about and doing whatever it takes to keep the doors at Slight Breeze Studios open.

More than anything, I want this project to remind people that the journey is the destination, and that the people who walk beside you are what make it all worthwhile.

Brianna Thomas

Kinda, Sort Of is my personal testimony of resilience, a touch of delusion, courage, and the 10,000 hours it’s taken to become the person I once imagined.

As a Black woman and the first in my family to pursue an unconventional career path, this script is a letter to my younger self—a reminder that it does work out, that help is closer than you think, and that you are exactly where you’re supposed to be, even when the present moment says otherwise.

This series captures the highs and lows of choosing your dream every single day: the tension of trusting your gut, and the discipline of walking by faith and not by sight.

More than anything, I want this project to remind people that the journey is the destination, and that the people who walk beside you are what make it all worthwhile.
